A little more than a year ago, when Toshiba announced it was discontinuing the HD-DVD format, prices on HD-DVD players and movies plummeted. I picked up an HD-D3 (which is a great upscaling DVD player, in addition to playing HD-DVDs) for less than $100 with 2 movies, and the local Hollywood Video was selling HD-DVDs for $5 a pop. Today I have 30 HD-DVDs, a modest library. It was a cheap way to get some very high quality content up on my screen.

I wanted to upgrade to Blu-Ray, though, so I could watch newer HD films. I got an LG Super Multi Blue drive and Arcsoft Total Media Theatre 3 to play both HD-DVDs and Blu-Rays on my computer, which is hooked up to my TV.

(As a note, I have a grand total of one Blu-Ray disc: Terminator 2.)

My HD-D3 has largely been collecting dust since I got the LG drive. I’ve thought about giving the player to someone in my family, but nobody could really be able to get HD-DVDs for it, and I wouldn’t want to give up my discs. However, with the new red2blu.com trade in offer, I’ll be able to do just that. I send in the UPCs, NOT the discs, so I can give away the player and some discs, while retaining all my movies.

Some people will complain about double dipping, and it’s a valid concern. However, this will allow me to finally let somebody else experience true HD content, and let me keep all of my own.
