cotysmith:

I get in these funks. A feeling of needing to get out and away. Whether it is away from the area, or my office, or the state, I just need to get away.

I am in a funk now.

With Lindsey starting school now, some bigger picture scenarios start seeming more near. We have until June for her to complete her program and then there should be no obstacles in holding us back from anything. We talk about moving out of state, maybe Seattle, but it all really depends on where things are at by that time. Maybe Portland. Maybe just move to the College Hill area like the cool kids I know. Hopefully things will line up and I can continue to focus my cross-hairs on the perfect gig that will fit the needs at the time, but all I know is that Wichita is probably too narrow of a scope for what we are wanting to do with our lives.

But until then, I wait. It just isn’t always easy to do so.

I really love Wichita. I love living here, I love the people that I meet on a daily basis, I love being near my family, and I love the arts community that is really blooming here. I think Wichita is getting ready to grow. A lot.

That being said, what I’ve seen of the Pacific Northwest really pulls me in. I think if I could move anywhere else in the world, it would be Seattle. (Portland looks cool, too, but I think I would personally fit better in Seattle.)

The biggest roadblock is money. Seattle is a damn expensive place to live. Wichita, on the other hand, is a relatively cheap place to live. I’d need to be making at least 30% more than I make now to offset the cost of living difference. I’m not college educated, I’m field trained (which, as far as I’m concerned, is a fair amount better in professions like mine).

Plus, I kind of like my job. It’s very flexible, the pay is decent, and I work with people I like. It’s not the most stable company in the world, but really, few are these days.

It would be kind of weird, moving from Wichita to Eastern Washington to Wichita to Seattle. But the whole area is just so…attractive. At least to me.

(Oh, and my pilgrimagevacation to PAX every year would be a fair bit cheaper if I moved to Seattle. Just saying.)
