A few thoughts about Star Trek
Star Trek was pretty much what I expected, which is to say it was awesome. It’s one thing to read about something (I read just about every review of the movie listed on Rotten Tomatoes today) but quite another to see it yourself. Some notes: (SPOILERS AHEAD)
- Finally, Uhura’s first name is canon. Nichelle Nichols chose good.
- Speaking of Uhura, I was unsure of Zoe Saldana before seeing the movie, but I found her to do a wonderful job of making Uhura youthful.
- Karl Urban did a wonderful job as Leonard McCoy. I laughed outloud when he said of Spock (upon first seeing him), “I don’t know, but I like him.” Oh, Bones, if you only knew.
- The only casting choice I’m still on the fence about is Anton Yelchin. His Russian accent was even thicker and more convoluted than Koenig’s.
- I certainly didn’t expect Spock to be the one who WROTE the Kobayashi Maru test. That was a nice surprise.
- “I am, and always shall be, your friend.” I might have almost cried a little.
- It’s kind of a big deal that Vulcans are now an endangered species, and that Vulcan was destroyed.
- The one thing I don’t understand…why didn’t Spock Prime just go see Scotty as soon as he was marooned on Delta Vega? He said himself that he knew about the Starfleet outpost, he could have warned either Starfleet or the Vulcan High Council.
- I think Uhura is a great foil for Spock, and it’s a good choice for both of the characters.
- Once again, the entire Starfleet is nowhere near Earth or Vulcan. What are they doing, getting painted? Earth should have a self-defense fleet, so should Vulcan, and every other major world. This “only ship in the sector” nonsense didn’t fly in Star Trek: TMP, and it doesn’t work here, either.
- I really wanted to hear Kirk correct someone when leaving Spacedock and say, “One-quarter impulse power.” It would have made my day. (Not like the movie didn’t already.)
- The scene where the Enterprise comes out of the gas in front of Saturn? That needs to be my computer’s wallpaper. Like, now.
- I’m going to take my mother to see the movie for Mother’s Day. I may see it again between now and then. And you should, too.
